Best known as the frontman of the Partisan-signed art-rock band Geese, 25-year-old New York musician Cameron Winter made his solo television debut this week with a performance on Later… with Jools Holland. Joined by a pianist and string ensemble, Winter performed “Love Takes Miles,” the closing track from his debut solo album Carefully. The appearance marked a stylistic departure from Geese’s high-intensity live shows, offering a more restrained and orchestrated sound.
The performance follows the gradual build of Winter’s solo career, shaped by his years as a core creative member of Geese. The Brooklyn-based band gained critical attention with their 2021 debut Projector, known for its post-punk influences and experimental edge. In contrast, Winter’s solo work leans into baroque pop, chamber arrangements, and introspective songwriting, signalling a distinct artistic direction under his own name.
Back in December 2024, when Cameron appeared on our cover, he was met with growing fascination and the beginnings of a cult following. Six months on, the musician is now playing to sold-out crowds across the remainder of 2025.
Winter is carefully shaping the course of his career. In interviews, he strikes a balance between joker and philosopher, deflecting easy categorising into genres, and pushing back against the “indie messiah” narrative often projected onto him.
His appearance on Jools Holland wasn’t just a promotional slot, but rather a clear indication of an artist stepping into his own.
