BBC Breakfast interrupted as host forced to step in after Carol Kirkwood pulled off air

BBC Breakfast suffered an awkward blunder on Monday’s episode

BBC Breakfast experienced an awkward glitch when Carol Kirkwood was unexpectedly pulled off-screen during her weather forecast.

On Monday’s (May 19) episode of the popular BBC programme, Jon Kay presented the day’s headline news alongside stand-in co-host Sarah Campbell, who filled in for regular presenter Sally Nugent.

The pair were then joined by weather presenter Carol, broadcasting live from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The King and Queen, along with celebrities, will get a first look at this year’s Show today, following a dry spring that has added pressure to the event’s preparations.

The annual horticultural spectacle will tackle topics such as climate change, sustainability, well-being, and dwindling wildlife. However, just moments into Carol’s segment, the show hit an unforeseen technical snag.

Jon began by saying: “The King and Queen are going to visit the RHS Chelsea Flower Show today, and among all the plants and trees, there will be a bit more bark than usual,” reports Express.

Sarah elaborated: “The names of the Queen’s new puppy, Bluebell, and Beth, who died last year, will be featured in Chelsea’s first-ever dog-friendly garden. It has been designed by Monty Don. It also features the name of the King’s dog, Snuff.”

Introducing Carol onto the show, Jon continued: “Carol is there for us this morning at the Chelsea flower show, and we’ll get a sneak peek, I think, of the dog garden later.”

As everyone in the studio and viewers at home turned to the screen, expecting to see Carol appear, the screen remained blank.

The broadcast also lost audio. In an effort to diffuse the tension, Jon quipped, “Oh, that is a really dark garden she has gone to.”

The studio erupted in laughter as Sarah chimed in, “Or the night garden.”

For a moment, it seemed the issue had been resolved as Carol reappeared on screen. However, as she began to speak, the screen went dark once more, and the weather reporter was abruptly removed from view.

Sarah let out a shocked gasp, exclaiming, “Oh no.” Jon swiftly intervened, remarking, “I was looking for bright flowers, sunshine, and a garden of life, but all we got was that.”

Sarah reassured viewers that the team was working diligently to rectify the situation, explaining, “I’m sure once we’ve got the technical working, we will be straight back to Carol because we all want to see what’s going on at the Chelsea show.”

Jon added, “Because she’s got insight on this first press day.” Turning to Sarah, he inquired, “I think it’s open to the public tomorrow, is that right?” Sarah confirmed, “It opens to the public tomorrow, and today is all the journalists and celebs. Very exciting.”

Later in the programme, the technical issue was finally resolved, and Jon announced, “We’ve fed and watered our technical equipment at the Chelsea flower show, and Carol is blooming again.”

The camera then cut to Carol, who was able to present her segment without any further interruptions.

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer
