A dramatic flashback episode is set to air
Coronation Street’s Mikey North has spoken about his character’s intense storyline on the ITV soap. The actor has portrayed fan favourite character Gary Windass since 2008. Long-standing soap fans have witnessed Gary blossom from a troubled teenager to finding himself in even more trouble dodging the police as an adult.
Mikey North appeared on ITV’s This Morning as he chatted to hosts Ben Shepherd and Cat Deeley about Gary’s future on the soap. The character has had turbulent few months on the cobbles following the arrival of neighbours Mick and Lou Michaelis earlier this year.
The new couple were quick to ruffle feathers, especially with the harsh way Mick treated Maria’s son Liam. Mikey spoke about the audience’s reaction to Mick and Lou and how much they affected the other Weatherfield residents, with Craig Tinker even losing his life. Mikey shared that a fan even stopped him on his morning jog to tell him to “sort Mick out”.
With Mick now in prison, Maria was horrified to see Lou try to weave her way into Gary’s life, tearing the couple further and further apart. Many soap fans thought Lou and Gary would have an affair, and it seemed they were almost right when Lou kissed Gary.
The night of the unwanted kiss was the last time viewers saw Gary, as he fled the street to stay with his mum and get some space from the women in his life. But it has now been confirmed that Gary is actually fighting for his life in hospital.
A dramatic flashback episode will reveal all about how Gary ended up in a coma, and who exactly is responsible for the violent act. In the meantime, Mikey let slip a few details about his character’s future on the soap.
He joked how his on-screen wife Maria has been dubbed as a “black widow”, with most of her partners being killed off. He said: “I think I’m about five or six years in counting, so I’ve probably got about six months left, or maybe a few hours left you never know.”
Ben Shepherd said: “We still don’t know what’s happened to him, has he been attacked?” But Mikey made sure he kept his lips sealed.
He explained: “Who knows Ben, this is the thing. I’ve been so worried about coming on and giving the game away. I was on the phone to the press office at work yesterday saying ‘can I say this, can I say that’. So I’ve got to be very careful what I say.”
Soap expert Sharon Marshall confirmed when viewers will learn more about Gary’s fate. A flashback episode is set to air which will reveal all about what happened on the night Gary was supposedly attacked.
Sharon said: “There is a flashback episode coming out that is giving us some more answers. That’s on Thursday.” She teased: “There’s also going to be a mystery woman at his bedside.”
Mikey added: “Yeah, there’s lots going on and I think all is going to be revealed in the flashback episode and see what happened to him.”
Following the highly-anticipated flashback episode, Coronation Street spoilers have revealed that Mick Michaelis will made a dramatic return to the cobbles as he escapes from prison.
After receiving the news that his family are falling apart, the dramatic episode on Monday, July 14 follows Mick as he orchestrates a prison break and plans to do a runner with Brody, Joanie and Shanice.
Speaking about the shocking storyline, actor Joe Layton said: “He isn’t after revenge, this is about him wanting to get his family together and start a new life with them.
“The anger that we saw when he killed Craig has been replaced by desperation and love for his family, but that doesn’t make him any less dangerous. Kit is potentially putting his life on the line once more in his attempts to stop Mick.”
Coronation Street continues on Thursday at 9pm.
