Coronation Street fans have been quick to comment as Gary Windass’ secret attacker was finally revealed and we saw what really happened to the character.

His future in Weatherfield has recently been left hanging in the balance, with viewers aware that Gary has been fighting for his life following a shock attack – with his love ones none the wiser.

It started when they believed he could be in danger, having not returned home from visiting his mum, Anna. Fans saw that he left amid tensions with his wife, Maria, over his support for their neighbour, Lou Michaelis.

Maria questioned if Gary was having an affair with Lou. But we saw that he had rejected a kiss from her, and then she tried to blackmail him.

After leaving for his mum’s, Gary has not been in touch since, leading to Maira and stepson Liam Connor worrying about his whereabouts. But Corrie fans, however, have seen Gary lying unconscious in a hospital bed, with his friends and family unaware of what has happened.

During Thursday’s (July 10) trip to Weatherfield, Maria was seen reporting Gary missing at the police station, and when DC Kit Green gets word of an unidentified coma patient at the hospital, he puts two and two together.

But Kit later had to tell Maria that the patient isn’t Gary, although he promised to find him. But during the same episode, it transpired that Lou had been holding vigil at Gary’s bedside, pretending to be his wife.

It was revealed she had an ulterior motive – as she was the one who put him in the hospital in the first place. In a dramatic flashback, it was revealed that Lou and Gary had got into a confrontation, with Gary threatening to expose Lou’s blackmail and report her to the police.

Terrified of leaving her children without a parent, Lou begged him not to, but when he suggested they’d be better off without her, she saw red and and swung at him with a metal pole – which links to her son, Brody, also being weilding a metal pole at Kit, after finding out he is his biological dad.

With Gary on the ground bleeding, Lou hid as Nina Lucas and Summer Spellman stumbled past, high on LSD after Aadi Alahan’s party. As fans arleady know, the two women ran off, sparking fears for them when the drugs wore off that they left someone to die.

Eventually, it was a dogwalker who stumbled across an injured Gary and rang an ambulance, all while Lou feigned innocence and acted as being Gary’s worried wife.

Back in the present day, at Gary’s bedside, Lou apologised to him, saying that she had only wanted to stop him from going to the police, which was why she wanted to be there when he woke up. But viewers saw Gary’s eyes flicker open minutes after she’d left.

Following the big reveal, Corrie fans too to social media to cast their verdict. @liiarla said: “Big reveal that lou is the one with gary even though not one person is surprised??”

Puzzled-Antelope614 fumed on Reddit: “Seriously, why did the writers go to all the lengths of pretending Gary was attacked by a “mystery assailant” and treating the reveal like some incredible, jaw-dropping twist?”

Public_Treacle_6634 replied: “Oh boy, what is sort of getting me, how come no one in the Hospital know who he is, because the whole street has been on that hospital, and Asha who seems to run that hospital hasn’t heard about this mystery guy and knows Gary has is missing and not put two and two together.”

The original poster then added: “I didn’t think of that. Given Weatherfield General literally sees half the street, I don’t get how nobody knows it’s Gary. Lou was literally there herself a few weeks ago, surely at least one nurse would’ve recognised her?2
