The Environment Agency has launched a probe following the discovery of hundreds of dead fish in a river and estuary.

The Agency confirmed on Thursday, June 19, that it had been alerted to the presence of dead creatures in the White River, St Austell, and was examining the cause. It also advised against swimming at Pentewan Beach, a designated bathing area nearby.

This warning has since been rescinded, but the investigation continues, with Environment Agency officers dispatched to the White River this morning, June 20.

A spokesperson stated: “Our officers attended the St Austell River yesterday evening to investigate after we received calls about dead fish on our 24 hr incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

“We identified a pollution incident and confirmed it had stopped last night. Hundreds of fish were killed in the river from St Austell to the coast at Pentewan, including trout, eels, and brook lamprey.”, reports Cornwall Live.

“Our officers returned to site first thing this morning and will be completing a thorough investigation. This will be used as evidence for any regulatory action that is required.

“Guidance against swimming has now been lifted, and we have no concerns about bathing water quality at Pentewan.”

South West Water has been approached for a statement.
