Celtic are reportedly in the mix to sign Peterborough winger Kwame Poku, but they face a lot of competition. The 23-year-old scored 12 goals last season and is now wanted by over 25 clubs, including Birmingham City, Sunderland, Rangers, and Sheffield United.
Give Me Sport report that Birmingham have already made a big contract offer to try and sign him when his current deal runs out this summer. Chris Davies — who used to work at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers — is pushing hard to get the deal done. Peterborough’s football boss Barry Fry hopes Poku will choose Birmingham, but it’s far from certain.
Sunderland could be tough to beat because they’re going up to the Premier League after winning the play-off final. Playing in England’s top division might be more appealing to Poku, especially with the money and exposure that comes with it.
Celtic are looking to strengthen the squad for next season, and Poku could add something different on the wing. He usually plays on the right, where Nicolas Kuhn and Yang Hyun-jun are already competing for places. Marco Tilio is also out on loan but might return. So while there is depth, there’s also room for a player like Poku to come in and make an impact.
Because Poku is under 24, Peterborough will get a fee if he joins another English club, but not if he moves to Celtic. That could help the Hoops if they decide to make a serious move.
But with so many clubs interested and a strong offer from Birmingham already on the table, Celtic would need to move quickly to have a real chance.
Celtic might not go for him in the end. If the price gets too high or turns into a bidding war, they could walk away.
English clubs can often offer more money, and Celtic may not want to get dragged into a fight for a player who might choose to go elsewhere anyway. They could decide it’s better to look at other targets instead.
