Alan Titchmarsh ‘wells up’ as he makes heartbreaking family admission

Alan Titchmarsh spoke with singer Elaine Paige on Sunday’s Love Your Weekend

Alan Titchmarsh looked emotional as he made a rare family admission during Sunday’s Love Your Weekend. The ITV presenter was speaking to Elaine Paige when he admitted to “welling up”.

Elaine was speaking about how she landed the role of Grizabella in Cats after Judi Dench withdrew from her first performance.

The actress was forced to pull out after she had an accident and tore her Achilles tendon.

Elaine only had one song to sing, but she explained to Alan it “meant so much to her”.

“I never tired of singing that song because it is so emotional both lyrically and in terms of the tune,” the singer explained.

“I still can’t watch it without welling up. I was lucky enough, as you very sweetly coached me in the All-Star Musicals,” Alan admitted.

“Of course, I remember,” Elaine replied as Alan continued: “But you said to me because I had to sing a song I had never sung before and that my dad had sung to my mum.”

Elaine chimed in: “You told me that, so I knew it was going to be emotional for you.”

Alan went on: “You told me, ‘Park that because it will get in the way of the song’.”

“Exactly because it is true,” Elaine replied. “And you did, especially the last note, your heart was in it, Alan. You sang your heart out, and it was noticeable, it was heartbreaking.”

“Bless you,” Alan emotionally said before adding, “But, from your point of view, those songs, exhausting to do every night because you have got to give so much to make them work.”

Elsewhere in the show, Alan admitted to “losing the plot” during a segment about dog grooming.

When one of the dog groomers began to brush one of the dogs’ teeth, Alan couldn’t hold back his laughter.

After composing himself, Alan issued an apology, telling his guests: “Sorry, I lost the plot halfway through.”

Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh airs on Sunday at 9.30am on ITV.
